Hello I am 7 years post breast cancer.and have completed 5 years of Letrozole . I’m thinking if starting magnesium glycenate supplements to help with sleeping and stress. Would this be ok going forward, my cancer was being aided by oestrogen . I have also started to have hot flashes again.

  • Dear Albertca,

Thank you for contacting Macmillan. I can see you also joined the breast cancer forum, and I hope you find it helpful. My name is Denise, and I am one of the Macmillan Cancer Information Nurses on the helpline.

I am sorry to read you have had breast cancer and now you are starting to experience hot flushes. I understand you are thinking about starting magnesium glycinate to help with sleeping and stress.

As we do not have access to NHS medical records it is difficult for us to be very specific. Unfortunately, we can’t check what medications you are taking and if there are any possible interactions. Supplement brands also vary, so it is best to check the ingredients too.

We would always suggest have a chat with your GP first. Your GP may want to check your magnesium levels, if they are in the right range, you may not benefit from supplements. Your GP will be able to discuss your options in more detail with you both for reducing your stress levels and difficulties sleeping.

You mentioned you stopped Letrozole two years ago. The hot flushes you are experiencing could be down to other health – issues not related to your previous breast cancer diagnosis so discussing these with your GP would also be advised.

Too much stress can be the cause of your difficulties with sleep. It is unclear from your message what have you tried so far to help? If you wish, you can have a look at the BigHealth app. It is free if you sign up via our website. It does have a Daylight and a Sleepio version.

You may also find exploring our Managing the late effect of breast cancer treatment booklet helpful. Although some sections of it may not be relevant there are some good tips on how to manage fatigue and hot flushes. Please find the link here.

You can also explore the Stress Management Society’s website for how to reduce stress here.

I hope you find this information helpful. Please do get in touch with us if you have more questions. You can call us free of charge on 0808 808 0000 or you can chat to us or email us. We are here every day from 8am to 8pm.

    Best wishes,

    Denise
