Not started treatment. Is Sauna safe?

Hi. Apologies, I hope this doesn't seem frivolous or a daft question.

A dear friend has a breast cancer diagnosis, but is still weeks away from beginning treatment whilst scans are done and her plan worked out.

She loves a sauna (traditional hot steam, not IR), and I would love to know if it is recommended for her to have them in this period before treatment starts, as I know they help with her wellbeing.

I am aware they are not recommended post surgery / during treatment

Many thanks

  • Hello Reetadeeta.

Thank you for getting in touch, welcome to our Online Community. My name is Fiona and I’m one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists here on the Macmillan Support Line.

As you’ve mentioned, there are several reasons why steam saunas should be avoided during cancer treatment, however I can find no evidence that states that they should be avoided before starting treatment.

As always, it would be best for your friend to check with her hospital team or Specialist Nurse, just to make sure that they are happy with her having these.

Supporting someone with cancer can be difficult at times so please take time to look after yourself. We have a Friends and Family Forum that you might with to join and you’re always welcome to give one of our nurses a call. We are available every day from 8am to 8pm and are always happy to help.

    With warm wishes
