Hi,

My mum has tonsil cancer and has had radiotherapy and chemotherapy. She had her PET scan last week after her treatment ended 12 weeks before. She is due to have a face to face meeting next week to understand how she has responded to the treatment. Before her PET scan, the surgeon assigned to my mum had scheduled an appointment for June. However, my mum received a letter today saying the surgeons appointment will now take place at the same time next week due to the results of the PET scan. As you can imagine, my mum is beside herself and assuming the worst. Can you give any advice as to why the surgeons appointment would need to be brought forward?

  • Hello smdh94.

Thank you for getting in touch, welcome to our Online Community. My name is Fiona and I’m one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists here on the Macmillan Support Line. I see that you’ve joined the Head and Neck forum, we hope that you find it a supportive environment.

We are independent from the NHS here on the Support Line and don’t have access to medical records so I’m afraid we can’t offer any further details, however it is not uncommon for appointments to be brought forward if the scan results have been made available sooner than expected.

People who have been through cancer treatment live with some worry and uncertainty, the fear of recurrence is entirely normal and feeling anxious is common. It would be helpful for your mum to keep herself busy and occupied until she sees her Consultant; we have some hints and tips here that she might find useful.

Please don’t hesitate to get back in touch if you need to. You can always encourage your mum to give one of our nurses a call directly. Sometimes talking over your worries with someone can be the best way to help.

    With warm wishes
