Hello
can you tell me what the general consensus is on how long to wait after completing chemotherapy(oral) before having a stoma reversal.
What are the NICE guidelines or what is best practice?
Thanks

Hi Edtheduck,
Thanks for getting in touch. My name is Fiona and I’m one of the Macmillan cancer information nurses.
Welcome to the online community. I see from your profile that you’ve joined a few of our forums. I hope you are finding them supportive.
You’ve asked about having a stoma reversal after chemotherapy. Generally, someone would have to wait at least 4 - 6 weeks after completion of chemotherapy before having any surgery. This is to allow the body to recover from the chemotherapy related side effects. However, the actual duration can vary based on individual patient factors and the chemotherapy used.
As well as waiting until you have recovered from chemotherapy you may have to wait longer due to there being a waiting list. Your team are best placed to tell you how long you will have to wait for this surgery.
The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) doesn't have specific guidelines for the timing of stoma reversal. The decision is made by the surgeon in consultation with the patient, considering individual circumstances.
It can be frustrating having to wait for procedures. You are always welcome to call the Support Line and speak to someone about your situation. It can help to talk things through.
I hope this information helps. Please feel free to get back in touch if you want more information or support.
Best wishes,
Fiona P,
Cancer Information Nurse Specialist
