I spent 3 day in a/e no sleep, 28 hr on a ward 4 hrs sleep. 5 l of ivfluid all input and out put measured ( ish). Food was a/e food whole wheat sandwich  ( at the end of 5 weeks of pelvic radiotherapy) . I had the runs ! They would not let me take imodium. Discharged kidney damage level 1with no follow up arranged. Is this normal do I need to contact anyone?

  • Dear Olivyellow,

Thank you for getting in touch. My name is Fiona and I’m one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists here on the Macmillan Support Line.

I can see that you have joined the womb cancer forum, I do hope that are finding this a warm and supportive community.

I’m sorry to hear that you developed stage 3 kidney damage. This is also referred to as an Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) and can be completely reversible with prompt treatment, which is why you needed to be admitted to hospital. Without treatment, this could progress to stage 4 or even 5 kidney failure which could have become a chronic condition. I hope that you are starting to feel better now.

It’s good to hear that your kidney function has returned to normal function, however we would expect you to have some kind of follow-up after this; a simple blood test will ensure that your kidneys are continuing to function normally. It is worth contacting your GP to discuss this.

It sounds as if there were aspects of your time in hospital that were difficult and unhelpful, such as not being allowed to take your Imodium and given an inappropriate diet for your needs. It would be useful to give your feedback abut your experiences with the hospital Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS). This page will help you find the contact details for the team of the hospital that you were admitted to.

    With best wishes

    Fiona S
