Hello - I’m experiencing a very upset stomach due to medication and it’s triggering panic attacks when I’m on the loo which is horrible and frightening. This is not the first time. I’ve struggled with panic attacks all my adult life, triggered when I’m feeling sick / pain but had them under control until I was diagnosed with stage four breast cancer.
What drugs are recommended to help me cope please as this is too much to deal with Disappointed

  • Hello K in Spain,

Thank you for contacting Macmillan. My name is Denise, and I am one of the Macmillan Cancer Information Nurses on the helpline. I can see you have joined other forums, and I hope you find those helpful.

I am sorry to read you have been diagnosed with stage four breast cancer and that you are experiencing very upset stomach as a result of your medication, causing you panic attacks when using the toilet.

This must be a very upsetting experience for you.

As we do not have access to medical records it is difficult for us to give specific advice. It is unclear from your message what medication is triggering your stomach upset. If this is a cancer medication you need to get in touch with your treating team as soon as possible. Many cancer treatments can cause stomach upset but can be managed well with the right medication. It is vital you inform your treating team about the side effect you are experiencing.

It must be very difficult having to deal with panic attacks, which you feel are difficult to control. It is unclear from your message what have you tried to manage your panic attacks and did not work. There are medications which help with managing anxiety and panic attacks, but these are only available on prescription, and you need to speak to your GP about your symptoms.

Alternatively, you can have a look at websites such as MindNo Panic for non -medicated approach. Please find link to more support lines here. The NHS Panic disorder website  does list possible medications to help but if we may suggest please do get in touch with your GP to have these symptoms assessed to be able to access the right help.

I hope you find this information helpful. Please do get in touch with us if you have more questions. You can call us free of charge on 0808 808 0000 or you can chat to us or email us. We are here every day from 8am to 8pm.

    Best wishes,

    Denise
