I don't know if you can help with this as it may be undefinable

I had a pink spot appear in 2022 but to cut a very long story short it was not removed and diagnosed as melanoma until 2024. By that time it was 6.2 mm deep.

Is it possible to judge how deep it would of been in 2022.. i. e how much would have grown in 2 and half years and what impact that growth would have on the outcome

  • Dear Essexgirl200,

Thank you for getting in touch with us and welcome to our Online Community. I’m Alison, one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists who works on the support line here at Macmillan.

I’m sorry to hear of your Melanoma diagnosis and that your diagnosis and treatment was delayed.

I can understand that you’re worried that the delay in diagnosis would have impacted the potential growth and staging of your cancer. It is certainly possible that the cancer was able to grow over this time, but your specialist team should be able to give you more detailed information about this. The results from the surgery may be able to give them more information about the grade of the cancer and therefore how quickly it can grow.

You may be concerned that something was missed from your initial concerns, and this impacted your diagnosis and treatment. It may be helpful to speak with PALS or your local Healthwatch, explore what happened, and get support if you’d like to take your concerns further.

It might help to talk through your concerns and be able to ask questions, so please don’t hesitate to call our support line to speak with one of our nurses. It can also help to reach out for peer support and I see you’ve already joined our skin cancer forum.

I hope this is helpful and if you need to ask further questions please don’t hesitate to get back in touch.

    Take care,

    Alison,

    Cancer Information Nurse Specialist
