Would my GP do a CA125 test while I am waiting for surgery in case I’ve got ovarian cancer already?

  • Dear

My name is Gillian, and I’m one of the cancer information nurse specialists on the Macmillan support line.

Thank you for reaching out to us, I can see you have joined some of our other forums I hope you are finding these helpful.

A CEA125 blood test measures the levels of protein CA125 in your blood, which can be elevated in cases of ovarian cancer. However, it is important to note this test is not typically used as a stand-alone diagnostic or screening tool for ovarian cancer.

Your GP or your gynaecology team might request a CA125 test if you have symptoms suggestive of ovarian cancer or if you have a high risk due to family history or genetic factors. I see from your biography you have a sister who has had treatments for ovarian cancer and you both have BRCA gene mutation.

If you have concerns about the possibility of ovarian cancer it is important to discuss these with your healthcare team. They can determine if CA125 or other diagnostic tests are appropriate.

We often find we can help more by exploring these questions over the phone. If this is something you think would help, then please don’t hesitate to get in touch via our support line on 0808 808 0000. We are available 7 days a week, 8am-8pm.

    I hope this helps.

    Best wishes,

    Gillian, Cancer Information Nurse Specialist

  • Thanks very much for replying Gillian.  I am going to make an appointment to see my GP to see what she advises me to do Blush

  • Hi Gillian just an update to let you know that I have now spoken to my GP and I can have the CA125 blood test.  She is also referring me to a dietician to see if I can be prescribed the weight loss injections.  However in the meantime I am dieting to make sure I am fit enough for the risk reducing surgery.
