Can a (bone) tumour appear to have enlarged on an MRI scan due to inflammation?

  • Dear Oneinamillion

My name is Debbie, and I’m one of the cancer information nurse specialists on the Macmillan support line.

Thank you for reaching out to us for information about the appearance of a bone tumour on an MRI scan. Here at the Macmillan Support Line, we can give general information and support. We are independent from the NHS and don’t have access to medical records, so we can’t give personalised information.

Bone tumours can change appearance for various reasons, such as the type of tumour, infection or inflammation, and reactions to medicines or treatment. Unfortunately, we are not able to answer your question fully as we don’t have any information about the specific situation. The treatment team for the person with the tumour is best placed to answer specific questions about the tumour and the reasons for any change.

I hope that this information has helped at this time, and am sorry that we can't answer fully. Please feel welcome to contact us again for further information or support. You are welcome to call us on 0808 808 0000 if you would like to. The lines are open from 8am to 8pm every day. It is often easier for us to discuss things by phone when we can get a clearer idea of the situation.

    With best wishes.

    Debbie
