Hi, I had a breast cancer operation followed by radiotherapy last year.

I was offered targeted therapy in the form of Abemaciclib but decided against this as I’m prone to diarrhoea.
I’m looking to take out travel insurance-  1 of the questions asks if was offered any surgery, chemotherapy or radiotherapy but chose not to proceed. Is Abemaciclib classed as chemotherapy for this purpose.

Many thanks in advance for your advice.

  • Hello Desdamona,

Thanks for getting in touch. My name is Megan, I’m one of the Cancer Information Nurses on the Macmillan Support Line.

Welcome to the online community, I can see you have yet to join any of our forums. You may find the breast cancer forum informative and supportive at this time.

I hope you find both our information on cancer and buying travel insurance and Breast Cancer Now’s information on travel insurance and breast cancer additionally useful in knowing.

Abemaciclib is a targeted therapy, not a chemotherapy. In this instance I think it would be best to contact the insurance provider to clarify if they are asking about any oncological treatments or specifically just surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

You may also get further clarification from your hospital team and may wish to ask them for their advice in this matter.

I hope this information is useful. Please don’t hesitate to get back in contact by email, webchat or phone, if you need further information or support.
