Possible bcc of left breast

Hi,

I was seen by my local dermatology department on the 15the of October 2024 due to 2 leisons/sores that have been present for over 2 years and not healing. I was advised by the consultant that I may have bcc in the left breast and that I would need to have them surgically removed within 3 week of seeing him.

However we are not in March 2025 and I am still waiting for the procedure.

I have called etc but I am just told that I'm on the waiting list but no date available as of yet.

I don't know whether I should be concerned about this or the possible implications of it still be present.

  • Hi Fox2412

Thank you for contacting us and welcome to the online community. I’m Gina, one of the cancer information nurse specialists on the support line.

I’m sorry to hear that you have had these lesions that have been present for 2 years and not healing. It sounds really frustrating that you have been told you should have had surgery 3 weeks after seeing the consultant but are still waiting.

The guidance is that, if it is a Basal Cell Cancer/BCC, it is a non-urgent referral as often thankfully it can take years for these types of cancer to develop in people. BCC rarely spreads to other parts of the body; therefore, it is almost never a danger to life. However, it/they might get larger, so it might be worth discussing this with your consultant, to see if they feel that it needs to be treated as non-urgent or not, as the wait for non-urgent can be up to a few months for surgery.

I think it’s understandable why you are concerned though, as initially the consultant told you three weeks, and as it is difficult for us to comment on individual cases, we would suggest that you get back in touch with your consultant’s secretary. They might be able to advise how long the waiting list would be, to give you an idea of when this surgery might be an option for you.

Here is also some further information about the removal of skin lesions by the British Society for Dermatological Surgery which you might find useful.

We also have our skin cancer forum which you might find helpful. This is where others in similar situations post about their experiences, and it is often a really good place of support.

    Best wishes
