Sorry for what feels like a bit of a self-indulgent question but I need cheering up - I have stage 4 BC in my lymphnodes and bone mets in my sternum - I just want to check if there is any problem with me having either Teeth Whitening or Botox while i'm on the above medication?

  • Hi BuryGirl73,

Thank you for contacting us. I’m Lorna one of the cancer information nurse specialists on the support line.

Welcome back to the online community. I can see from your profile that you have joined our forum, I hope you are finding this helpful and getting support too.

Breast cancer and the treatment for breast cancer can change how you feel about your body. It’s only natural to want to feel more like yourself and have cosmetic treatments to cheer yourself up.

Botox or Botulinum injections contain a chemical produced by bacteria which can be used, in minute quantities, to reduce the stiffness or tone within individual muscles. Contraindications for this treatment can include those people taking anticoagulants or have a neuromuscular disorder. Targeted therapies like Ribociclib can reduce your white cell count and make you more prone to infection too.

If you are considering having teeth whitening done it’s important to speak to your dentist, they will be able to offer advice and support. Some diseases are contraindicated when having teeth whitening done and can include diabetes and cancer.

We would recommend that if you are considering having any treatments done to discuss this with your consultant or clinical nurse specialist beforehand, to make sure it’s safe for you.

Some people use complimentary therapies to feel better during cancer treatment. You might find this information helpful. Look good feel better hold wellbeing workshops for people living with cancer, and Penny Brohn hold online sessions you might find useful too.

I hope this information is helpful. Please don’t hesitate to get back in touch if you have any more questions.

    Best wishes,

    Lorna
