Cystoscopy

I had a cystoscopy on Monday. My bladder looked as though there was a blizzard in it. The doctor had to suck out the white flakes twice to see anything but they still came. She didn’t know what this was. I think she was a junior doctor or registrar. I have bladder cancer and upper urinary tract cancer. I’ve had my starter of BCG.

can you advise what this white stuff is please?

  • Hi Derby74,

Welcome back to the online community.

I’m Lorna one of the cancer information nurse specialists on the support line.

I can see from your profile you have joined our bladder cancer forum . I hope you are finding it helpful and getting a lot of support from it.

It can be upsetting discovering symptoms you can’t explain, after your BCG treatment for bladder cancer.

BCG is given directly into the bladder (intravesical). This can make the bladder react in a way that makes the immune system get rid of cancer cells. It can cause your bladder to become irritated and a common side effect can be blood or debris (that appear like white flakes) in your urine.
If you are worried at all you should speak to your team who will be able to answer any questions you might have, and at the very least put your mind at rest.

I hope you find this information helpful. Please don’t hesitate to get back in touch with us if you have any more questions.

You can always give us a call. You can talk to one of our nurses on the support line. It’s a free phone number on 0808 808 0000 and we are here 7 days a week, 8am-8pm or email us.
