Breast biopsy site sore

I had a few biopsy to the 5/6cm lump on my breast a week ago and multiple clips placed (diagnosed with grade 3 breast cancer 4 weeks ago). One of the sites has been sore since, especially when pressure of some sort is on it (not alot just like arm resting near it). It is almost under my breast so when i look at it i have to bring the breast up so i can see which pushes the lump to the surface and the incision site looks as if it is raised like a spot although when i am not touching the breast it is not raised at all. Should i get this seen to or is this to be expected after 1 week?

  • Hello Tink_

Thanks for getting in touch. My name’s Michael, one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists on the Macmillan Support Line.

I am sorry to read that since you had some breast biopsies, a week ago, that one of the sites has been sore since, and you also mention that the incision site looks raised, like a spot.

There are different types breast biopsy. Once the local anaesthetic wears off, your breast may ache and may be bruised for the next few days or weeks.

We do not have access to any clinical records, and we cannot diagnose what the cause of your current symptoms are. It maybe that you have an infection.

We strongly advise you to contact the clinical team looking after you, straight away. If you have a breast care nurse you can contact them.

If you cannot get hold of someone from your clinical team straightaway, you must either get an urgent appointment with your GP or you must contact  NHS 111 or the  GP out of hours service, if you live in Northern Ireland.

I hope you find this information helpful. Please don’t hesitate to get back in touch.

You can always give us a call. You can talk to one of our nurses on the support line. It’s a free phone number on 0808 808 0000 and we are here 7 days a week, 8am-8pm or email us.

    Best Wishes
