Husband is going for his 4th chemo session next week but his PSA has not reduced yet, bloods still to be taken for next session. They have been 47, 76, 94.

wondering if this is expected or if chemotherapy not working.

  • Hi

Thanks for getting in touch with Macmillan Cancer Support through our Ask A Nurse platform. I’m Linda one of the nurses from our support line.

I’m sorry to read about your husband and see from your about page that it sounds like it’s been a bit of whirlwind for both of you since January.

I see that in addition to the chemotherapy your husband has also been having treatment with Degarelix  and has had radiotherapy to his spine.

I wonder what his oncologist has said in relation to the rises in the PSA Mabel mo? If this isn’t a conversation that has been had yet we would direct you to them for a discussion about this.

Understandably, when the PSA is not reducing this can be a concern as, for most, the expectation is that it will lower with treatment. However, this is only part of the picture and other factors such as improving symptoms or scan results can be just as important.

I’m sorry that we can’t fully answer your question as treatment decisions should be tailored to the individual. Without having access to his hospital notes or the clinical view of his oncologist we may offer you a general response that is not aligned to your husband’s situation.

We would suggest asking the oncologist about their confidence with the potential of the chemotherapy, as it sounds as if they are of the view that there is a benefit with continuing with his current treatment plan

If after this conversation you husband has doubts or concerns it may be worth discussing whether it would be helpful to seek a second opinion.

If you or your husband would like to chat about this further or have other questions we would be happy to hear from you. We often find having a chat allows us to ask a little more and this has help us look at how we can best support you.

Our free phone number on 0808 808 0000 and we are here 7 days a week, 8am-8pm or email us.

    Best Wishes

    Linda

  • Thank you for your reply.  My question was really help me prepare for what’s coming next in my husbands journey . He has never wanted to know his prognosis and only wants to focus on the positive. When I mentioned that he was experiencing some issues he walked out therefore better not to say.

    thank you anyway
