Hi

my mum has just had radio therapy for a tumour in her bowel. She is having to go to the loo a lot more and her back passage is very sore. What can I get to give some relief. She also feels sickly first thing in the morning what may alleviate this?

thanks

  • Hello Klmfly,

Thanks for getting in touch. My name’s Michael, one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists on the Macmillan Support Line.

I am sorry to hear that your mum is having to go to the loo a lot more and her back passage is very sore as well as feeling sickly first thing in the morning, after just having radiotherapy for a tumour in her bowel.

As a cancer charity, we are a separate organisation to the NHS, so we don’t have access to medical records. We therefore can’t provide specific information or give advice on what to take to relieve her symptoms

With any new, worsening or changing symptoms, we strongly advise that you contact her consultant, radiotherapy team or Clinical Nurse Specialist at the hospital to talk this through with them.

Someone from mum’s clinical team will be able to assess her symptoms and should be able to prescribe something, to make her feel more comfortable.

If you cannot get hold of someone from the clinical team straightaway, you must either get an urgent appointment with her GP, or you must contact  NHS 111, or the  GP out of hours service if you live in Northern Ireland.

I hope you find this information helpful. Please don’t hesitate to get back in touch.

You can always give us a call. You can talk to one of our nurses on the support line. It’s a free phone number on 0808 808 0000 and we are here 7 days a week, 8am-8pm or email us.

    Best Wishes

    Michael
