Smouldering leukemia

Hi

I've been diagnosed with smouldering leukemia recently and have been on medication for three weeks. My skin is very itchy which was really the only symptom. My face has come up in a rash and sebaceous filaments and has not improved since starting medication. Would it be alright for me to have a beauty salon facial using products for sensitive skin?

  • Hi Moseley

Thanks for getting in touch and welcome to the online community. I hope you’re finding it helpful sharing your experiences with others.

My name is Paula and I am one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists on the Macmillan Support Line.

It’s never easy getting a cancer diagnosis and struggling with the potential side-effects of treatment. I can imagine how distressing these symptoms are for you to manage without support.

Here at Macmillan, we can give general advice and support. We are independent from the NHS and don’t have access to medical records so cannot give personalised information.

We would suggest prior to booking an appointment for a beauty facial to report your new and worsening symptoms to your hospital team or GP as soon as possible. They would want to hear if you’re experiencing any problems and in an ideal position to assess your symptoms and investigate them further.

Your team may refer you to a dermatologist to review your skin condition, who might prescribe something more appropriate to help your current symptoms

The impact of living well after a cancer diagnosis can be challenging. It’s important to reach out for support. There is a range of support that you may find helpful to contact. You may be able to find support locally in your area also.

I hope you find this information helpful. Please don’t hesitate to get back in touch.

You can always give us a call. You can talk to one of our nurses on the support line. It’s a free phone number on 0808 808 0000 and we are here 7 days a week, 8am-8pm or email us.
