Alpha Feto-protein bloods

I had a scan and consultation with bloods to check my testes due to lumps 4 weeks ago.

testes were all clear but bloods, in particular alpha-fetoprotein,  were high and of concern to the pharmacist and consultant oncologist. The pharmacist checked my vitamin and alternative supplements and suggested to stop turmeric with black pepper. That was done but my bloods has come back even worse. None of the constituents of the Full blood count (FBC) is of concern only the AFP.

Also, I have been taking 3 injections of Filigrastim ( GCSF) Could these be affecting the liver count? AFP is a cancer marker and I am obviously concerned that It may have spread to the liver.

Currently awaiting the CT scan results and had colon sessimoid tumour removed in jiuly 24 but lymph nodes 4/18 were infected with no distal tumours.

Could the preventative chemo regime that has recently changed ( removed oxiplatin due to CIPN, but increased cisplatin to 100 %) as I was on adjuvant chemo at 80% for 13 sessions and had 11 of 13 so far?

any thoughts would be helpful fwiw no or very little alcohol for 6 months and no red meats, or UPF's since this all began and a reg gym goer, non chemo weeks. And no wait loss as constant 85 kgs all through ( bloody cant shift the fat)

  • Hello jayjay101,

Thanks for getting in touch and welcome to the online community. My name is Karen and I’m one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists on the Macmillan Support Line.

I can see that you’ve joined the bowel cancer forum on our online community. I hope you are finding this welcoming and supportive. I can also see from your post on the forum that you have a consultation today with your treatment team and scan results.

As a cancer charity we are a separate organisation to the NHS and don’t have access to your medical records. We can’t give details regarding your specific situation and what may be causing raised alpha fetoprotein (AFP) blood levels and whether this could be due your current treatment cisplatin or GCSF.  AFP, as you mention, is a tumour marker but there could be a range of reasons why this is elevated. You also mention that oxaliplatin has been stopped due to chemo-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN).

It’s understandable that this is a worrying time for you, jayjay101. Sending best wishes for your appointment today and hoping your consultant can answer your questions and concerns. We may be able to explain more and support you better over the telephone, please don’t hesitate to give one of our nurses a call after your appointment if you need more information or support.

Bowel Cancer UK also have a range of support available here.

I hope this information is helpful and that you get the answers you need when you speak to your medical team.

If you have any information or support needs, the Macmillan Support Line offers practical, clinical, financial, and emotional support.

    Best wishes

    Karen, Cancer Information Nurse Specialist
