Hi, I was diagnosed with T3b N1 M0, Gleason 10 prostate cancer. Had a PSA score of 15 on diagnosis, 2.0 in December after 3 months hormone therapy and I commenced 20 fractions of RT in Dec finishing week before Xmas. Have a tel appt with oncologist next week. PSA done in advance is 1.7. Everything I have read suggests this is probably not as big a fall as expected. I need to frame some questions to ask oncologist and would appreciate any help.

  • Hi Indykid,

Thanks for getting in touch . I see you have joined the Prostate Cancer forum , welcome to the online  community .  My name is Barbara  and I’m one of the cancer information nurse specialists on the Macmillan support line.

I am glad you are thinking ahead and preparing some questions for your consultant so that you get the best out of your telephone appointment .

We have some questions to ask your healthcare team ,it might be helpful to have a look over this before your appointment .

You may consider asking about how effective  your treatment has been ?How and when you will know if your treatment has worked ? You may also want to ask about future chances  of cancer coming back . You will also be able to discuss any side effects you are having following treatment .

You may want to ask some  other general questions about your follow up appointments. How frequent they will be ? What symptoms to look out for in the future and who to contact ?

Prostate Cancer UK have  information about your follow up after treatment and this includes some information about PSA level after radiotherapy and what to expect .

You may get anxious between appointments. This is natural. It may help to get support from family, friends or a support organisation such as Prostate Cancer UK.

Macmillan is also here to support you. If you would like to talk, you can call the Macmillan Support Line on 0808 808 00 00 or Chat online to our specialists.
