Mirena and hormone + breast cancer diagnosis

HI, I've been diagnosed with Oestrogen and Prog. positive BC, due to have a DIEP Mastectomy in a few weeks.  I was on HRT with the Mirena (I've had a Mirena for the last 23 years but HRT only 2 years).  Obviously I've stopped the Oestrogen gel straight away but my consultant said nothing about needing to remove the Mirena - is this something I should be doing?  Thanks

  • Dear keepingittogether,

Thank you for getting in touch with us and welcome to our Online Community. I’m Alison, one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists who works on the support line here at Macmillan.

I’m sorry to hear of your diagnosis and can only imagine what a difficult time this must be for you. It’s understandable you have questions and concerns about your Mirena coil.

There is conflicting evidence about whether or not to remove the Mirena coil after a hormone positive cancer diagnosis. There’s some evidence to say that if you have the coil at the time of diagnosis, it’s advisable to have it removed. However, the advice does seem to be quite patient-specific. We would suggest getting in touch with your consultant or specialist nurse to make sure you’re advised what’s best for you.

I hope this is helpful and if you need to ask further questions please don’t hesitate to get back in touch.

    Take care,

    Alison,

    Cancer Information Nurse Specialist
