After a bilateral mastectomy I had a surgical site infection in my left breast. I had a flush & new expander put in. That new expander ruptured & I have decided to go flat. What is the recovery time after this last surgery? I was hoping to go to Europe 8 wks after my surgery, is this realistic?

Looking forward to your reply.

  • Hi Cynthia2

Welcome to our online community. My name is Sarah one of the Cancer Information Nurses on our Support Line.

I’m sorry to read that you have had an infection after your mastectomy and that the new expander ruptured. This must have been a difficult time for you.

I hope that the recovery time after this last surgery will be far more straight forward for you so you can enjoy your trip to Europe.

Recovery time can vary from person to person. You have also had some major surgeries already over a possible short period of time. You would be best to talk this through with your hospital team. They have access to your notes and know exactly what you have been through and how you have managed after your previous surgeries.

This leaflet explains advice from the Civil Aviation Authority about travel after surgery. It is also important to check with your travel insurer too.

When you have had surgery for cancer you will have an increased risk of a blood clot when travelling, especially flying. Our information here helps to explain this and has some tips on how to reduce your risk.

I hope this helps to answer your question. All the best with your trip to Europe and if we can help with anything else, please feel free to get back in touch.

    Best wishes,

    Sarah B
