  • Hello Marion,

Thanks for getting in touch, and welcome to the Online Community. My name is Ursula and I’m one of the cancer information nurse specialists here at Macmillan cancer support.

I am sorry to read of your terminal bowel cancer diagnosis, and that you are also currently experiencing a flare up of a long-standing intercostal inflammation problem. It is understandable to have questions on what medications it may be safe for you to take whilst also taking Capecitabine chemotherapy.

Here at Macmillan, we are independent of the NHS and do not have access to medical records or information. We are therefore unable to give personalised advice. With any new, changing or worsening symptom, like pain/inflammation, we would always recommend speaking to your GP, NHS 111 or specialist team to have this properly assessed.

Chemotherapy can increase your risk of an infection, which can be serious and needs urgent treatment. Ibuprofen is a type of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). Taking these can lower your temperature and potentially hide signs of an infection.

Ibuprofen can also cause side effects which include stomach problems. There is also a risk that they could cause stomach ulcers. We would recommend speaking with your GP or clinical nurse specialist before taking these to check if it is okay for you to do so or if there are any alternatives they may recommend.

You may also find it helpful to chat in more detail with one of our nurses, by giving our support line a call. We often find we can talk through things in a bit more detail over the phone, giving you the opportunity to ask more questions if needed. Also, the bowel cancer forum on our online community can often offer support from others going through similar challenges.

I do hope you find this information helpful, but please do not hesitate to get back in touch with us if you need any further support.

    Take care,

    Ursula
