Hi

i have metastatic breast cancer and have a three week break from chemo as my PET Scan falls on the day I should be having the next dose. I had intended to have a covid vaccination tomorrow but I’m now wondering if this will have an effect on the outcome of the scan and perhaps I should leave the jab for another day. Can I have your thoughts please.

  • Hi Kabjo,

Thank you for getting in touch with us and welcome back to the online community.

I’m Lorna one of the cancer information nurse specialists on the support line.

It’s understandable to be worried about having your Covid vaccine while having a PET scan and during your treatment for breast cancer.

The Covid 19 vaccine has been shown to cause some swelling in lymph nodes under the arm in which the injection was given. This can affect your scan results. It would be helpful to inform your team or radiographer about your vaccine. They have access to your clinical notes and will be able to tell you when the best time is for you to have this.

I hope this is helpful, please get back in touch with us if you have any more questions.

    Best wishes,
    Lorna
