Is the prednisolone 5 mg tablets twice daily prescribed with Abitaterone and Olaparib given to me to deal with side effects or to boost the efficacy of these two medicines.

I've found that I've been missing out the Prednisolone ( due to the overall number of drugs I'm on for AF and stroke) and wonder could this account for a slight raising of my PSA from 2.8 to 4,9 ( last month)

  • Hello danyer

Thank you for contacting Macmillan. My name is Helen, I’m one of the Cancer Information Nurses on the Macmillan Support Line.

    Welcome to the online community.

You have asked what prednisolone, a steroid, adds to your abiraterone and olaparib treatment.

You have answered your own question actually. It both boosts the efficacy of the treatment and reduces the adverse side effects such as issues with your adrenal glands.

Omitting the prednisolone might account for the rise in your PSA, your urology team will be better placed to advise on that. In the meantime, try to take the steroids as prescribed, or let your treating team know you are struggling.

I hope that’s helpful and all the very best with the rest of your treatment.

    With best wishes, Helen
