Blood clots on lungs - mastectomy postponed

  1. Hello, my mum was due to have a mastectomy this week but they have found blood clots in her lungs. I’m anxious that treating the clots will leave too long a gap after chemo finishing and operating but I suppose safer to wait until they have gone to operate? She’s on arovi blood thinner injections now. Grateful for any advice or anyone with a similar experience. She had 14 rounds of chemo and the tumour has shrunk but was in the lymph nodes and they may still be affected.

    thanks

  • Hello Anon89,

Thank you for contacting Macmillan. My name is Helen, I’m one of the Cancer Information Nurses on the Macmillan Support Line.

Welcome to the online community. I see you have joined some of our cancer online community groups and hope you find them warm and welcoming.

You are quite right in saying that currently the greater risk to your mum’s health is the pulmonary embolism, or blood clot. Prioritising her operation before dealing with the blood clot would not be the safe option.

You have posted your query on the nurse specialist page, but if you wanted to get a little peer support (you asked if others had experience of blood clots delaying surgery), do post the query on the breast cancer group’s page as well.

Wishing your mum a full recovery.

    With best wishes, Helen
