Can I be treated if I have stage 3 vulvar cancer? (Dimension: 125/62/54 mm)
I took 2 cycles of different chemotherapy, but it doesn’t help. It’s there  another treatment option available? The doctors in my country suggested just palliative radiotherapy.

  • Hi M.A02

Thanks for getting in touch and welcome to the online community.

My name is Paula and I am one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists on the Macmillan Support Line.

I am sorry to hear about your stage 3 vulval cancer. I can imagine how difficult it’s been receiving this diagnosis and then being told your cancer hasn’t responded after 2 cycles of chemotherapy.

This can be a challenging time, especially when the treatment options you’re now being offered appear limited.

Here at Macmillan, we can give general advice and support. We are an independent charity and don’t have access to medical records. We cannot give personalised information, especially if you live abroad as the standard of treatment may vary from the UK.

The treatment for vulval cancer depends on several things. Including how far the cancer has spread and a person’s general health. The main standard treatment offered in the UK is surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy or in combination.

Newer options recently being offered such as immunotherapy which can be accessed through clinical trials.

It may be worth asking your team if there are any suitable trials that you may be eligible for, which may include newer treatments that aren’t standard practice for your country.

Palliative care is also offered here in the UK in some cases. It helps to manage symptoms such as pain and can help to slow down cancer growth.

The emotional impact of living with vulval cancer can be tough. It’s important to reach out for support. Here in the UK there is a range of support organisations that you may find helpful to contact. You may be able to find support locally to where you live also.

You may also find our online community supportive. Some people find it helpful to share their experiences with others.

I hope this information has been helpful, please don’t hesitate to get back in touch.
