If I attach it to my leg, will it still work in bed.
Dear Linda B
Welcome to our online community, I notice you have not joined any of our forums yet. A lot of people find that a helpful and supportive place to visit and be a part of.
Thank you very much for getting in touch with us with your question about nephrostomy bags. My name is Luzia and I am one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists on the Macmillan Support Line.
Here at the Macmillan Support Line, we can give general advice and support. We are independent from the NHS and don’t have access to medical records so can’t give personalised information.
This is a useful NHS leaflet that contains instructions for Nephrostomy care. You maybe have a similar leaflet from your team. This Video shows how to attach night bags to leg bags. A nephrostomy overnight bag needs to sit below the kidney, it is best to have it on the catheter stand/hanger that you should have been provided with or sit it in a bowl beside your bed. Having the bag just on your leg while sleeping may mean that it cannot drain well which puts extra pressure on your kidney. If you have any questions or have any difficulties with the nephrostomy bags you need to call 111 during the weekend to get a District Nurse/Community Nurse to see you. During the week your treatment team/Specialist Nurse/GP/Practice Nurse will also support you with any questions you have.
You can also call one of our nurses directly if you want to talk over your situation. We may then be able to give you further information.
Take care,
Luzia
