How to set up a care plan for a family member

A family has terminal cancer that has spread.

He does not seem to have a care plan in place and his pain has increased considerably.

He lives 2 hours away for me and I do not drive.

He is taking himself off to A& E in the early hours because of the pain is so bad.

How can he get a care plan where he can have someone come out to him to administer pain relief when it gets unbearable.

I am not his next of kin so unsure what I can do .

  • Hi

Thanks for getting in touch with our online community. My name’s Louise and I’m one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists here.

It’s good you have reached out. With the right care plan pain caused by advanced cancer can be managed at home without your family member needing to go to A&E because it is so bad.

Different health professionals work closely together to support people at home and help manage symptoms such as pain. They can get him the right pain medications and monitor closely for any changes.

They can also arrange for injections (just in case medications) to be put in the house, for someone to come and administer if the pain becomes difficult.

We would encourage him to contact his GP straight away for assessment of his pain. The GP can get other professionals involved too if needed.

It must be worrying that he is struggling with pain, and difficult to be so far away. It’s important you look after yourself too. Some people find it helpful to share experiences with others in a similar situation. We have a family and friends group here and you can find support for you in your area.

It might also be helpful to call us. One of our nurses would be happy to talk things through.

    Kind regards
