Withdrawal symptoms after adjunctive chemotherapy

I had emergency surgery in April to remove a tumour that was blocking the bowel. The surgeons removed the large intestine and made an ileostomy that will probably be permanant. I had 8 three week cycles of adjunctive chemo: capecitabine and oxaloplatin (for the first 4 cycles). Oops pressed send too soon.  My question now concerns post chemo symptoms. Is there a known set of "withdrawal" symptoms that I have to get through? The chemo ended 2 months ago and the last 3 or 4 weeks I have had itching (feels like mosquito stings) on the abdomen, ankles and feet, elbows and arms that doesn't seem to be going away. When I saw the oncologist in December he denied it was anything to do with the meds and probably an allergy. Anybody had a similar experience?

  • Hello Ihateneedles,

Thanks for getting in touch with us and welcome to the online community. I’m Linda, one of the nurses from our support line.

It’s common to continue to have side effects from chemotherapy for some months after treatment has stopped.

It’s difficult for us to say what is causing the itching but it’s possible that it is some sort of allergic reaction.

However, Capecitabine and Oxaliplatin can cause a rash and itching.

I would encourage you to discuss with your GP who can prescribe some medications and/ or creams to relieve the itch. You may wish to contact the chemotherapy unit who can also advise you.

    I hope this helps.

    Take care and best wishes,

Linda J.  (Cancer Information Nurse Specialist)
