12 months ago I had a successful operation to remove a tumour from my lung. 6 months later a CT scan was fine. 9 days ago I’ve been told the cancer is back, had to have a biopsy from my lymph gland and also need a brain scan (booked in).at the moment I just can’t see a way out, I feel so down and helpless. It’s going to be at least another week before I receive a diagnosis and I just keep thinking there won’t be any treatment options! That it will be too late.  Realise it’s Friday so probably won’t get a reply till Monday.
thank you

  • Hi Eryl,

Thanks for getting in touch at what sounds like a very difficult time. My name is Ursula and I’m one of the cancer information nurse specialists here at Macmillan cancer support.

I see from your profile you have joined a few of our forums, I do hope you are finding them supportive.

I am very sorry to read that you have had a recurrence of your lung cancer a year after having surgery. Here at Macmillan, we recognise that this can be a particularly difficult time of uncertainty whilst you await biopsy results and further scans, before next steps can be discussed. I am sorry that you feel so down and helpless. But please know there is support available. We would also encourage you to speak with your GP about how you are feeling. Whilst we are coming into the weekend it is important you know that there are still services available for you to access if you need urgent help with how you are feeling.

As we are independent of the NHS and do not have access to medical records, we are unable to offer personalised advice. However, your specialist team will discuss any potential treatments with you. They will consider factors such as the site of the recurrence, the type of the lung cancer, your general health, and any previous treatment you have had. If you have access to a clinical nurse specialist, it might be useful to speak with them (after the weekend) whilst you wait on the full details of your diagnosis, as they too are here to support you.

You may also find it helpful to chat in more detail with one of our nurses, by giving our support line a call. We often find we can explain our answers in a bit more detail over the phone, giving you the opportunity to ask more questions if needed. Also, the lung cancer forum on our online community can often offer support from others going through similar challenges.

I do hope you find this information helpful, but please do not hesitate to get back in touch with us if you need any further support.

    Take care,

    Ursula
