My wife and i wonder if we have to use protection if we have intercourse. We are in our 70s. Is there any risk to her from the drugs?

  • Hi Neilmac

Welcome to the online community. Thank you for getting in touch with us. My name is Lynsay, I am one of the information nurses with Macmillan Cancer Support.

I hope you are feeling well during treatment. Thank you for your question. This is a good question, however there is relatively little information available relating to this.

I can’t find any specific research that has shown that Keytruda and Kisplyx are transmitted through bodily fluids, however there may not have been any direct research conducted looking at this.

The information I did find seemed to suggest that transmission through bodily fluids is unlikely based to the way these drugs work in the body. However, caution during sexual activity was still advised.

Cancer Research UK have some general information discussing sex when a partner is going through treatment. I have attached this here. We would encourage you to consider asking your cancer nurse specialist or consultant for further information to see if they could provide more specific advice for you around this.

I hope this helps, please don’t hesitate to get in touch again if there is anything else we can help with.

    All the best,

    Lynsay
