Is it ok to take sildenafil after a bcg induction treatment for bladder cancer  and post cystoscopy?

  • Dear JohnnyBoko,

Welcome to the online community. My name is Penelope and I am one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists on the Macmillan Support Line. Thank you for your question about sildenafil after BCG treatment and cystoscopy.

Sildenafil can be taken for different reasons. If it is an ongoing course, then medications may continue unless advised otherwise. As your question is about medication, we would suggest that you speak to your hospital team, GP or a local pharmacist for further advice. They will have access to your medical records or ask you about your individual circumstances and any other medications or illnesses.

If the medication is for erectile dysfunction, then we would still advise checking with local healthcare providers. In addition, there are also some recommendations on sexual activity after BCG treatment.  People may be advised not to have sex for at least 48 hours after the treatment as it may be uncomfortable. Also, small amounts of BCG can get into your body fluids. This includes fluid made in the vagina and the fluid that contains sperm. To protect any partners, your cancer doctor may advise that for a week after treatment you use:

    • a condom for vaginal or anal sex
    • a condom or a latex barrier such as a dental dam for oral sex.

Your cancer doctor or specialist nurse can give you more information about this. If you do not have a number of a specialist nurse your consultant’s secretary may be able to provide it. The secretary can be contacted via the hospital switchboard. If you are unable to contact any other healthcare professional and need urgent advice about medication you can also contact NHS 111.

    Best wishes,

    Penelope, Cancer Information Nurse Specialist
