I have what looks like a reaction on the backs of my hands  1 week post docetaxel and 2 days post wearing latex gloves as protection because my fingers are splitting.  Can I take anti histamine and use a boots own bite and sting relief antihistamine cream. My hands are not particularly dry on the back have been using handcream E45 throughout treatment and it doesn't irritate even now when using.

  • Hi KEW66

Thank you for contacting Macmillan Cancer Support. My name is Hilary, one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialist’s on the  Macmillan Support Line.

I’m sorry to read that you are being troubled, by a possible reaction to the latex gloves you have been wearing to protect your hands from the skin damage, due to the Docetaxel.

It sounds like you are aware that this sore, red and peeling of the hands and/or feet are a possible side effect of the chemotherapy that you are having. However, we always recommend that for any new, changing or worsening symptoms, you should contact your 24-hour chemotherapy helpline without delay. We would therefore recommend you call them to let them know about this new symptom that you are experiencing that may be related to the latex gloves.

They will be able to assess and advise the best way to manage this to prevent any escalation which could be potentially serious. Unfortunately, as we are not directly involved with patient care, we are not able to advise you what medication, if any, can be taken with any other medicines that you may be taking. The helpline number will also be able to advise you about this. Please do give them a call as soon as possible.

If there is anything else, we can help you with please feel free to get back in touch.

    Best wishes

    Hilary,

    Cancer Information Nurse Specialist
