Bosniak kidney cyst Type 3

My husband is recovering and receiving maintenance therapy for Bladder Cancer.  Left kidney mass found and described as Bosniak cyst Grade 3.  I do have more details of size if that's helpful.   I have my husband's permission on his medical records to discuss his condition.  I feel many have had positive treatment from their health professionals but that has not been the case for my husband.  This has resulted for both us in seeking another opinion on future management.  The hospital consultations and concerns my husband has about the conservative management recommended for the bosniak cysts.  He has been told wait a further 8 months for another MRI scan.  He did ask if a biopsy could be done via cystoscopy to confirm the nature of the mass.   He was told it was not necessary at this stage.   The latest Consultants letter is more concerning in details than how he described them to us on the day.   As David's wife I see the toll it has taken on him not knowing and this dismissive attitude.   He is 77yrs old and despite everything his general health is good.  Apologies this is not straight forward I just feel I need to talk to someone for support. With many thanks.

  • Dear Pinna,

Thanks for getting in touch with us at what sounds like a difficult time. I’m Ursula, one of the cancer information nurse specialists.

I’m sorry to hear of your husband’s diagnosis of  Bozniak 3 kidney cyst, whilst he also continues to receive maintenance therapy for bladder cancer. It’s understandable to want to talk to someone for support around this, particularly as you say you see the toll it is taking on your husband.

As we are independent of the NHS, we do not have access to medical records or information and are therefore unable to offer personalised advice. However, like your husband, many people will seek a second opinion when they are given a diagnosis or treatment plan for a medical condition.

If you are concerned that the consultant’s letter does not align with the information you and your husband were given at the consultation, we would suggest contacting their secretary to highlight your concerns and possibly request a phone call or a meeting to discuss this in more detail.

If you feel your husband is being dismissed or he is not receiving the appropriate care, we would suggest speaking to the PALS team as they may be able to offer confidential advice and support with this..

You are also very welcome to call us on the Macmillan Support Line and speak to one of us about your husband’s particular situation. We often find that it is easier to talk things though over the phone and allows you the opportunity to ask questions.

I do hope you find this information helpful, but please do not hesitate to get back in touch with us if you need any further support.

    Take care,

    Ursula
