Does this Role even exist ?

I’m wondering if anyone knows of a specialist role dedicated to cancer patient advocacy, someone who can provide comprehensive, personalised support throughout the treatment journey? I’m asking on behalf of my best friend, who is currently having a very difficult time in hospital. I expected there would be accessible support like this, but so far all we’ve received are booklets and website addresses.

She doesn’t need palliative care, nor can she physically call or attend workshops or group sessions. She doesn’t need a welfare advisor at this stage either. What she really needs is someone who understands how the healthcare system works and can act as her voice—without the emotional charge of people close to her. She needs help challenging or understanding her options and choices, and support in planning ahead for the treatment.

Most importantly, she needs someone she can openly share all her fears and worries with, without feeling like she’s being negative or manifesting the worst outcome.

I’m looking for someone who can be a single point of contact to help navigate the complexities of cancer care—dealing with issues like negligent treatment, finding appropriate support services, and offering emotional guidance. Ideally, she would like to work with someone who can manage all of this without having to go through multiple people or organisations.

Has anyone had experience with this type of advocate, either through the hospital system or independent services? Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

  • Hi LauPal

Thanks for getting in touch with Macmillan cancer support. My name is Sarah one of the Cancer Information Nurses on our Support Line.

I am sorry to read that your best friend is having a difficult time in hospital. Navigating the complex of cancer care can be difficult and support services are invaluable for anyone diagnosed with cancer.

Hospitals can provide a patient advocacy service. Your friend’s hospital team will be able to give more information, or you can look on the hospital website.

You can also look for local support services here as many provide practical, clinical and emotional support.

Finding one person to support someone’s complex needs maybe difficult. You could reach out to our online community, to ask for support from others going through similar experiences. You may also find this information, from a patient’s experience helpful, about being your own advocate.

Your friend can access a personalised guide to services relevant to their needs through our website.

If you think it maybe helpful, you can call through to speak with one of our nurses. We can often explain things better over a phone call.

I hope this information helps. Please feel free to get back in touch if you want more information or support.

    Best wishes,

    Sarah
