Someone in the Lung Cancer chat group told me it was the most terrifying experience of their lives and as a result I am now feeling incredibly anxious. I was obviously a bit anxious anyway. Can you help reassure me?

  • Hi AKAFS.

Thanks for getting in touch with us. I’m Helen, one of the cancer information nurse specialists. I’m sorry to hear you’ve had a negative experience in our online community. I’ll be sure to feed that back to our moderators.

It’s understandable you are feeling anxious about having a bronchoscopy, you normally have this as an outpatient or day case procedure in the endoscopy unit. To help you relax you usually have a local anaesthetic, and you can request some light sedation.

A bronchoscopy is a common, safe procedure and you are unlikely to remember anything about the bronchoscopy if you have a sedative.

Please do get in touch with one of our nurses at the Macmillan support line. Often, it’s easier to reduce someone’s anxiety by speaking to them directly.

I hope this has been helpful. If you have any further questions, please get in touch by emailwebchat, or phone. We would be glad to support you in any way we can.

    Best wishes

    Helen
