  • Hi Doretta

Thank you for contacting Macmillan Cancer Support and welcome to our online community. My name is Joanne, one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialist’s on the  Macmillan Support Line.

I’m sorry to hear that your PET scan has been cancelled at such short notice. It must be distressing to be told it will be the new year before it can be rescheduled. Please contact your oncology team to tell them about the delay. They will need to decide if this length of waiting is safe for you or if an alternative scan can be used so you can start treatment.

Coping with a cancer diagnosis, and waiting for treatment to start are very stressful times, so it’s important to look after you mental health and wellbeing. Reaching out and talking to others can be helpful, do you have someone around you, friends or family,  that you can talk to about how you’re feeling? Finding ways of reducing your stress levels may also be helpful.

Some people find it easier to talk to someone who isn’t as closely affected. At Macmillan we are always happy to talk about your experiences and the impact of your cancer diagnosis and potential treatment delays. You can call us free from most landlines and from most mobile phone networks on 0808 808 0000, 7 days a week, 8am-8pm.

You can also access support from our trained volunteers. At Macmillan we have Macmillan Buddies and Breast Cancer Now have “Someone like me”. Many areas have local support groups, and you can use our “In Your Area” to find a group near you.

There is also an organisation called Maggie’s which offer psychological support for anyone with or affected by cancer. They also offer face to face or online gentle exercise sessions, art therapy and relaxations session.

I hope this information is helpful Doretta, please don’t hesitate to get back in touch if there is anything we can help with, by email, webchat, or phone.

    Best wishes

    Joanne,

    Cancer Information Nurse Specialist
