Hi,

I had by biopsy meeting and my result was Gleason  3+4. My MRI showed no signs of spread, bone scan was clear. I have a pet scan in the future.

When I received my letter it also mentioned interductal carcinoma.

What can I expect from this?

  • Hi Darksal,

Thank you for contacting Macmillan Cancer Support. My name is David, one of the   Cancer Information Nurse Specialist’s on the Macmillan Support Line.

I am sorry to learn of your recent diagnosis of prostate cancer. However, I am glad to hear your MRI showed no signs of spread and bone scan was clear.

A Gleason score of 3+4 indicates a group 2 which means this is intermediate grade (between slow and fast growing) and most cells look similar to normal cells.

We cannot tell from your query if intraductal carcinoma is present or, has been ruled out. However, a PET scan will help determine if there is any other cancer present.

The biopsy also seeks to establish if it is high-grade or low-grade and, if intraductal carcinoma is present then your doctor may recommend active treatment options such as surgery or radiotherapy.

We would strongly advise you have a further discussion with your consultant or, Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) to clarify the contents of your letter and what this may mean for you going forward.

Sometimes people find strength in talking to others who may have similar experiences. Our Prostate Cancer Forum may be a good place to start.

Alternatively, Prostate Cancer UK or CRUK are also good sources of information and support.

If there is anything else we can help you with please feel free to get back in touch.

    Best wishes

    David, Cancer Information Nurse Specialist
