Suspected Melanoma

Hi,

I had had a sore armpit since February and had mentioned to GP and breast clinic etc. it was seen on US that there were enlarged lymph nodes, one in particular but the helium was intact. All breast investigations were clear so no further action.

Pain and discomfort persisted. 2 months ago my hair dresser commented on a new scalp mole. I went through photo hub, recalled, saw a dermatologist consultant. Who recommended urgent removal. I had the lesion/mole removed last week from my scalp 4mmx4mm irregular borders, blue/white veil, blue black in colour. My armpit pain has increased so I returned to the GP a few days after removal. I realised left side of my scalp is the suspected melanoma, left armpit and now 2 obvious raised/enlarged lymph nodes above my collar bone (left side).

Could this all be related or am I jumping the gun. I want to remain informed and realistic about the possibilities.

Thank you.

  • Good morning CJL48,

Thanks for getting in touch, and welcome to our online community.

My name’s Karla, I’m one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists on the Macmillan Support Line.

It’s natural to worry and wonder if the increase in armpit pain and other enlarged lymph nodes are related to this suspected melanoma on your scalp.

As nurses on a helpline, we can’t say for sure what’s happening. However, we can point you in the right direction.

Melanoma can spread to the nearby lymph nodes but there can be other causes of swollen glands too.

We’d recommend letting the dermatologist know about these lymph nodes if you haven’t already. It’s important to let them know your concerns about it being related to the possible melanoma. They may be able to reassure you or might want to check them.

This information on sentinel lymph node biopsy and this melanoma treatment patient guide may be useful to look at.

Nothing prepares you for going through something like this and coping with uncertainty is tough. You can have lots of different emotions and worries. Lean on the people around you if you can. Your GP can also talk through what’s happening and how you feel.

Many people really benefit from speaking to someone in a similar position. I see you’ve joined our melanoma forum. The support and understanding offered there may help.

I hope this information is helpful. Sometimes it can help to talk things through with us. We often find that we can help people more by speaking with them on the phone.

    Take care and best wishes,

    Karla (Cancer Information Nurse Specialist)
