I had a mastectomy and 4 lymph nodes removed in June which went well.

over the past few weeks I have swelling on the mastectomy scar and towards my under arm which appears to be worsening.
what could this be? Should I ask to see my consultant for advice?

  • Hi Deb37

Thanks for getting in touch and welcome to the online community.

My name is Paula and I am one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists on the Macmillan Support Line.

I can see you have joined several breast cancer forums. I hope you’re finding it helpful sharing your experiences with others.

Here at Macmillan, we can give general advice and support. We are independent from the NHS and don’t have access to medical records so cannot give personalised information.

It’s good to hear your surgery for breast cancer went well, but I can understand your concerns about the current swelling you’re having on your mastectomy scar and under your arm. It’s could possibly be post treatment related but it’s difficult to say at this stage.

We would suggest as you have new and worsening symptoms for a few weeks, to report these concerns to your consultant as soon as possible. They would want to hear if you’re experiencing any problems and in an ideal position to assess your symptoms and investigate them further.

I know this a worrying time for you, so it’s important that you don’t feel alone. Here at Macmillan, we offer a range of support and services you can access. You may find this link helpful to look at.

I hope you found this information helpful.
