Hi I’ve been told that silk is best to sleep in for caps or lightly pre tied head scarves for when hair starts to fall out . I can’t find any though and having looked at Amazon there are other sleep caps of different materials with varying reviews . What would you recommend pls ?

Thank you for contacting us here at Macmillan Cancer Support.  My name is Rae and I am a Cancer Information Nurse Specialist.

Silk is a popular choice for those experiencing hair loss due to treatment.  Its smooth texture can help reduce friction, which minimises hair breakage and scalp irritation.  It is gentle of sensitive skin, which is particularly beneficial if your scalp is tender from treatment.  Other materials that are often recommended include cotton, bamboo and linen.  If you are unable to find a pre tied head scarf, having a pillowcase made of silk is an alternative option.

We have information about hair loss, and how to tie a scarf or bandana.

As a cancer charity, we are unable to endorse or promote individual products or companies, but Cancer Hair Care Charity do have a list of suppliers of headwear and scarves.

Look Good Feel Better also have workshops and information about caring for yourself through treatment.

Please do have a read through the links and information above, and the nurses on the support line are happy to discuss if you have any further questions or support needs.

I have included a further link about all the ways that we can help.

    Best wishes
