Hello. I am so worried and not yet seen a doctor. I have a red flat patch on side of my nose that has literally been there for years! I just got used to it. However, I woke up and it had been bleeding. I don’t feel it was scratched and it looks no different but I’m worried about what it could be and the amount of time it’s been there. I just can’t make an appointment. With it being on my face I’m so scared of what may happen next but I know I need it seen. I don’t know what to expect if I go. Any help appreciated

  • Dear Racoon,

Thank you for getting in touch with us. I’m Alison one of the Cancer Information Nurses on the support line. Welcome to our online community and I’m glad you’ve reached out to us.

It’s only natural for you to be worried about why this patch on your nose has started bleeding. Unfortunately, the only way to find out what’s going on is to go to your GP who can then refer you to dermatology if necessary.

If cancer is suspected, it could be a basal cell carcinoma (bcc) or a squamous cell carcinoma (scc). A BCC is very slow growing and rarely spreads elsewhere. An SCC grows a little quicker than a BCC, but is usually also easily treated.

Taking that first step to make an appointment can be difficult as the fear of the unknown can cause a lot of anxiety. It may help if you’re able to take someone with you to your appointment to give you some support. Preparing what you want to say can also give you some confidence and ensure your concerns are listened to.

I hope this information is helpful. Please feel free to get back in touch if you want more information or support.

    Best wishes,

    Alison (Cancer Information Nurse Specialist)
