hi, i have had an EBUS test done last week and now i have been told i will have a phone appoinment to go over the results, now i am thinking that this can not be bad news as this is over the phone, would you get a Cancer diagnosis over the phone ? or would these be face to face ?

  • Dear mein1066

Thank you for contacting us here at Macmillan Cancer Support.  My name is Rae and I am a Cancer Information Nurse Specialist.

An EBUS test, endobronchial ultrasound scan and biopsy is a way of your doctor or nurse to get a picture of your lungs and nearby lymph nodes.  They also take samples of cells or tissue from the area.

Delivery of results from a biopsy does vary.  You are correct, traditionally being told that a person has a cancer diagnosis did always take place in person, but these practices have sometimes changed due to the COVID pandemic.  Sometimes a cancer diagnosis can be communicated over the phone, and recent studies suggest that the psychological impact on patients is similar whether the news is given in person or over the phone. The important point is that in whichever manner the information is communicated, it is with empathy, clarity and support.

Waiting for test results can be a very challenging and anxiety provoking time.  It is important that you seek help to manage this if it starts to affect your daily life.  We have information when you are worried that you may have cancer.  There is information to help manage anxiety

We are here to talk to you 7 days a week if you feel it would help to talk about how you are feeling and your worries.  You can contact us between 8am and 8pm.

    Best wishes
