Hello. My husband had a radical cystectomy 5 months ago. He was in the operation for 9 hours and also had a kidney removed. As he has chemotherapy now, I'm noticing that his short term memory seems to be impaired. Is this normal? I was told that anesthetic can affect memory.

  • Hello Lbell,

I’m Michael, one of the Cancer Information Nurses Specialists here on the Macmillan Support Line.

It is good to see that you are using our Bladder, Emotional support and Family and friends forums.

It sounds like your husband underwent major surgery. I hope his recovery went well and that he is coping well with chemotherapy.

Some people may notice changes in their memory or concentration during or after cancer treatment. This can sometimes affect their ability to think clearly.

The causes are unclear, and it may be caused by a combination of factors, including the emotional reactions to cancer and treatment, such as anxiety and depression.

It is not clear how many people develop problems with their concentration or memory during or after cancer treatment.

I have included some information for you to look at, about Cognitive changes (chemo brain).

We would strongly advise speaking with your husbands clinical team at the hospital, as we cannot diagnose what is causing the impairment to his short-term memory. They will be able to assess him and perform any tests required to determine the cause.

I hope this information is helpful. You can always call one of our nurses directly if you want to talk over your concerns or require any further support.

The Macmillan Support Line offers practical, clinical, financial, and emotional support. You can call us free from landlines and from most mobile phone networks on 0808 808 00 00, 7 days a week, 8am – 8pm.

    Best wishes,

    Michael. Cancer Information Nurse Specialist
