Good Afternoon

For the past couple of weeks ive been suffering with very painful calf muscle.  I have stage 4 lung cancer and undergoing targeted therapy.  I have had a scan and nothing showed up, there are no clots luckily.  I have mentioned it to my oncologist and breathing specialist and they dont know what to suggest.  Does anyone else suffer the same?

  • Good morning Jojodagooner,

Thanks for getting in touch and welcome back I see that you are on the lung cancer forum. I hope you find this helpful. I’m Kate one of the Cancer Information Nurses Specialists here on the Macmillan Support Line.

I am sorry to hear that you have been struggling with a very painful calf muscle. I am glad you have had this investigated and that there are no blood clots. I hope you are doing well with your targeted therapy.

Leg cramps can be common and are usually harmless. Sometimes they can develop when you are having treatment for cancer and there could be other reasons too.

It could be a side effect to your treatment that you are taking, or you may be deficient in magnesium and other nutrients. When having cancer treatment this can happen. Please speak to your team about this they will be able to do blood tests and advise further.

You could be referred to a Physiotherapist, so that they can give you some exercises to do. When living with cancer and having treatments many people find by following a healthy balanced diet and staying active helps them with their overall wellbeing.

I hope this information is useful. Please do not hesitate to get back in contact by email, webchat or phone, if you need further information or support.
