My father has had a partial diagnosis or rectal cancer but had test done recently to confirm. The doctor said they would be surprised if it wasn’t.
his symptoms are getting worse quite quickly and as a family we are struggling and hate seeing him this way. We are waiting for next steps but he’s gotten really weak can barely stand. Refuses to eat and take certain medication. within 3 weeks he’s gone form walking and eating fine to being almost bedbound. I’ve tried talking to doctors and they gave him shakes to build him up but he just seems to get worse and worse. Don’t know what to do

  • Hi Victoria121

Thanks for getting in touch and welcome back I see that you are on other groups. I hope you are finding it helpful. I’m Kate one of the Cancer Information Nurses Specialists here on the Macmillan Support Line.

I am sorry to hear that they feel that your dad has rectal cancer and that he is worsening in his symptoms. It can be a worrying time when waiting for results.

With any new, changing, or worsening symptom we always recommend that you contact your GP or 111 to be assessed.

If you are worried about the sudden deterioration, you could ring 999 or go to A&E.

We are unable to diagnose on this platform. It may be a good idea to speak to the consultant that your dad is under also and make them aware of his changing condition.

I hope this information is useful. Please don’t hesitate to get back in contact by email, webchat or phone, if you need further information or support.

The Macmillan Support Line offers practical, clinical, financial and emotional support. You can call us free from landlines and from most mobile phone networks* on 0808 808 00 00, 7 days a week, 8am – 8pm.
