Hi - I have just had PSA score back of 11.8 and having googled it am worried sick it's Cancer. I have a history of Prostatitis and UTI's but have never had a score this high (previous highest was 8) I'm 51 years old and generally in good health. Does a score this high mean the worst or could it be down to a bout of prostatitis?

Thanks

  • Dear

Thanks for getting in touch and welcome to the online community. I hope you are finding it supportive. My name is Gillian and I am one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists on the Macmillan Support Line.

It is understandable you are concerned by your recent Prostate specific antigen (PSA) blood test result. It is important to remember that an elevated PSA level can be caused by several factors. Prostatitis and urinary infections (UTI) which you mention you have a history of, can raise PSA levels.

A raised PSA level alone does not confirm a cancer. If you haven’t done so already, it would be as well to speak to your GP about your recent PSA result and any worries and concerns you may be having about prostate cancer. They are in the best place to offer specific information and advice as they are familiar with your medical history and have access to your medical records.

I hope this information is helpful. You can always call one of our nurses directly if you want to talk over your concerns or require any further support.

    Best wishes

    Gillian, Cancer Information Nurse Specialist
