Finished my treatment in December

recently had blood test and GP rang me to say my lymphocytes levels were low and normally I would be referred to a haematologist but because I have had treatment he is going to speak to my oncologist

do I need to be worried?

  • Dear

Thanks for getting in touch and welcome to our online community. My name is Gillian and I am one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists on the Macmillan Support Line.  I can see from your profile that you have already joined some of our online forums. I hope that you are finding these helpful.

I am sorry to hear your recent blood test is causing you concern.  Lymphocytes are a type of white blood cell. They play an important role in your immune system, which helps your body fight and prevent infection.

Following cancer treatments such as chemotherapy, surgery, and radiotherapy the immune system can become affected. It can take a considerable period post treatment for your immune system to recover while it is repairing itself.

I would feel reassured that your GP is looking further into this and liaising with your oncology team. They will be able to work together to seek a better understanding of how to monitor you going forward.  If in the meantime if you feel unwell, we would recommend that you contact your GP, hospital team or NHS 111 to talk about your symptoms in case a medical review is needed.

I hope this information helps. Please get back in touch if there is anything else we can support you with.

    Take Care,

    Gillian
