Rapidly growing suspected SCC

I was diagnosed with suspected SCC on my forehead last week and am waiting for an appointment with the plastic surgeon.  It seemed to appear from nowhere and in three weeks has grown at an alarming rate and is quite uncomfortable.  My dermatologist has made an urgent referral. I have a couple of questions

could you advise on the procedure for skin graft/ skin flap for the removal of SCC

Is this procedure performed under local anaesthetic

does SCC usually grow so quickly (doubled in size in three weeks)

is there anything I can use on the margins (which are very red and sore) to make it more comfortable

many thanks

Anita

  • Hi Anita

Thanks for getting in touch. My name is Sarah one of the Cancer Information Nurses on our Support Line.

I can see you have joined a few of our forums. I hope you are finding our online community a helpful and supportive place.

I am sorry to hear that you have a suspected SCC which is growing at an alarming rate and becoming uncomfortable. It is understandable to feel anxious and concerned with a suspected cancer diagnosis.

An urgent referral is recommended by Nice guidelines for a suspected SCC with treatment starting 62 days after referral to a specialist.

Treatment varies depending on different factors such as the size, location, depth, and your overall health. Your cancer team will be best placed to talk through with you about making treatment decisions.

Both the Skin Cancer Foundation and British Association of Dermatologists have information on treatment options including using a local anaesthetic to remove an SCC, you may find helpful.

If you have worsening symptoms Anita, it is important to get back in touch with your dermatologist. If you are unable to get through to the dermatology department through the consultant secretary or specialist nurse you can contact your GP or NHS 111.

I hope this information helps. Please feel free to get back in touch if you want more information or support.

    Best wishes,

    Sarah
