  • To Irishlass,

Thank you for getting in touch with Macmillan Cancer Support.  My name is Kelly one of the Cancer Information Nurses on our support line.

I’m aware that you are trying to understand  what your results mean in relation to information you have been given about the BRAF gene

My understanding of ‘sequence variant was detected in codon 600 of BRAF gene’ is that this is the official medical terminology used to confirm that a BRAF gene mutation is present.

This can cause melanoma cells to grow.

However, we would always encourage discussing this further with your consultant. Due to their enhanced level of knowledge in interpreting test results fully they are best placed to support you further with the more medical details often used in test reports.

They will also be able to help you understand more about potential treatments which may be considered when the BRAF gene is present.  This can include treatments such as surgery and targeted therapy.

From your information it’s not clear if you have a consultant already involved with your care or waiting for an oncology referral.

We’d encourage you to get back in touch with the cancer nurse you mentioned. They will be able to let you know what the next steps are including any consultant appointments. Making them aware any questions you have may help too.

We know that waiting for further information can be a stressful time

I’m aware that you have joined the melanoma forum on our online community.  The support from others with similar experiences can be invaluable.

Our information about other types of support available may also be good to be aware of if needed.

I hope this information helps.  Please feel free to get back in touch for more information and support if needed.

    Best wishes,

    Kelly
